What is the metal snap dome? Metal snap dome(also name metal dome, snap dome), which is made ??of stainless steel. the thickness is between 0.05mm to 0.20mm. The metal dome is an important part of the switch. metal snap dome is mainly used in membrane switch, key switches, PCB board, FPC board, medical devices and other products.

How many types of snap domes do we have?  All most snap domes we have made, but generally we have divided into four types. Please see belows:

1. Four-leg snap domes: also call cross snap dome, most used in the membrane keypads;

2. Round snap domes: the shape is round, widely used in mobile phones;

3. Triangle snap domes: the shape is triangle, which can be made with two legs.If you want to have legs into your pcb board, then you can choose this type;

4. Oblong snap domes: the shape is oblone, like cut the two side of round snap domes.

Triangle snap domes with two legs

Which snap domes have two legs? normal it’s triangle snap dome. Please see below triangle snap dome with two legs specifications:

From 4mm to 12mm diameter do all have the legs, & have three kinds of the legs,the width * length see below:

1: 0.8mm*0.8mm, short legs;

2: 0.8*1.5mm, middle legs;

The difference of stainless steel,nickel and gold-plated metal snap domes

Metal snap domes (metal dome) material is generally used from Japan stainless steel 301. Normally we have two plated: nickel and gold-plated.

Why do we do the plated on the snap domes? The main role is to reduce resistance and increase the conduction properties of the product . The contact resistance from small to large is: gold plated, Nickel plated, stainless steel. Although the plating can reduce the resistance, it is also a corresponding increase in the cost, especially the price of the gold-plated snap domes.

In general, the resistance of the stainless steel material is less than 100 ohms , nickel plated is less than 10 ohms. and gold-plated is less than 1 ohm.

The travel of metal snap dome

When you develop and design your products, you also should know the travel of the metal snap dome. So how do you measure the metal snap dome travel ? Please have a look at the following picture:

From here we can see that: the total height of metal snap dome is 0.52mm, material thickness is 0.10mm, so how about the travel? Here’s a formula:
Stroke = total height – material thickness, then the snap dome travel is 0.52-0.10=0.42mm.

Today we talk about what kind of snap dome is suitable to make metal dome array? Metal dome array is covered with a layer which has attached snap dome (metal dome) under.

Round snap domes are the most commonly used in metal dome array, such as our mobile phone.The cross snap dome is used in the membrane switches, so it’s also can make into metal dome array. Triangle snap dome with legs can’t make into dome array, as it’s with two leg, we can’t assemble it on the dome sheet.
